A little rain couldn't stop these egg hunters! After being postponed from 10am to 4pm due to weather, Island kids found 10,000 eggs at Firefighter's Field. For the second year in a row, Hope Church sponsored the event with some help from Island groups including the Roosevelt Island Marlins and the Girl Scouts.

An unexpected snowstorm, named Winter Storm Avery, blanketed the east coast on November 15 dumping six inches of snow on the Island. The heaviest snow came down during the Thursday evening rush hour. Gridlock stopped many people in their tracks and led to several-hour-long commutes with bumper-to bumper-traffic on the FDR Drive until late at night.

The local public school hosted their annual Monster Bash this past Friday. The PTA fundraiser has long been seen by Island children as the unofficial start of Halloween. The event, open to the entire community, offered games, homemade baked goods and other yummy hot and cold, savory and sweet offerings. More than 200 kids turned out Saturday morning for the opening day of Roosevelt Island's Little League season. 


Events kicked off with a parade down Main Street to the Pony field where the national anthem was sung. This year's league is cosponsored by the Child Center of NY Beacon program and the Roosevelt Island Center of Community Development

Hundreds of Islanders turned out Saturday for the annual Roosevelt Island Egg Hunt, hosted this year by Hope Church Roosevelt Island. The free event featured music, crafts, and three different egg zones, over which thousands of eggs were scattered.

At 10:00 a.m. on March 14, 65 students walked out of PS/IS 217 to join families and community members in demanding stronger gun laws. The event was part of the #Enough! National School Walkout and marked the one-month anniversary of the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 students and teachers dead.

The Roosevelt Island Seniors Association hosted a Black History Month celebration on February 24 at the Senior Center in collaboration with Island youth. RISA President Barbara Parker hosted the event, which included poetry, a dance performance, drumming by Lamine Thiam, and several rounds of trivia—at time stumping the crowd of several dozen attendees. Despite a scorching heat wave, Islanders came out to enjoy a day of art, exercise, dance, and music at the Fall for Arts Festival on September 23. Dozens of artists spent the day decorating large canvases in Southpoint Park and on the Rivercross lawn, while kids enjoyed bouncy houses, face painting, henna tattoos, and crafts. On August 5, in a sold-out free event, Cornell Tech held their Community Day to welcome Islanders to the newly opened campus.

Elected officials lined up to speak at a ceremony on the lawn, while Islanders sampled the catered breakfast, made crafts with kids, posed for a photo booth, and enjoyed the open space.
