Last week, during a hearing at New York’s Supreme Court, the Roosevelt Island Marlins board of directors was forced to capitulate on its controversial termination of a family’s membership from the swim club as part of a settlement agreement. The agreement also affirmed a slate of 10 nominees for the upcoming board elections – a group that includes one of the plaintiffs. The board was granted its request stipulating that club parents may communicate wi...

During the past decade, road running on Roosevelt Island has become increasingly popular due to the Island’s flat, fast race course and the scenic views along the East River seawalls.

But recent residents’ complaints about the parking restrictions, noise, and traffic, caused by the 5K and 10K events has led us to review our race permit policy. After meeting with a delegation of Southtown and Roosevelt Island Residents’ Association members this week –...

One of the few Island organizations that appeared to be stable now seems to be spiraling out of control.

In March, the Roosevelt Island Marlins, a swim club that’s been based on the Island since 2005, brought home an impressive 14 medals from the Junior Olympics, 7 from the Eastern Zone Short Course Championship, and 10 from the Eight and Under Metro Championship.

Out of the water, though, some parents say the team’s winning ethos comes at a cost. They paint a picture of a deeply divided organization where bullying is common and even small disagreements...

The last four teams standing got reinforcement from former MLB players, including Aaron Boone and Mike Lowell, as well as sports broadcaster Jessica Mendoza.

Many families and kids enjoyed a photo-op with the sports stars, who also signed paraphernalia that...

Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) President Susan Rosenthal says she’s ready to spend. With a capital budget account bursting with over $10 million this year, and upwards of $20 million next year, according to Rosenthal, Islanders need to voice their opinions as to where the money is best allocated.

RIOC is a public benefit corporation. That means expenditures, as well as the use and maintenance of Island facilities, should benefit Island...
