When I was in high school in Brooklyn back in the 1980’s, I remember a joke told by a classmate: How can you tell the difference between New Yorkers and tourists? Answer: The tourists are all looking up at the skyscrapers, and the New Yorkers are all looking down at the dog poop.

Had I been growing up on Roosevelt Island, that joke would not have been so relevant, since, until about ten years ago, Roosevelt Island had a bylaw forbidding dogs from eve...

Looking at the latest Hey Susan column, I noticed a renovation of Southpoint Park was mentioned.  Planning firm Fitzgerald and Halliday presented the draft proposal for its final recommendations at the February 2017 RIOC meeting. That project was community-driven, and multiple meetings and surveys were held over a year period to gather input from Islanders. Since then, RIOC has not shown the community any plans for reworking Southpoint Park.

It is time...

HEY SUSAN!

I have a few concerns. There was considerable talk that the dog park would be moved to the area just south of 480 Main Street and adjacent to the sprinklers and playground. This area is already congested in the summer with considerable foot, bike, and RIOC vehicle traffic. Has there been a decision where the permanent home will be for the dog park and if 480 is that location, can you please reconsider?

Also, what is the hold up on the new tra...

It’s a brisk December morning and I am doing something out of character – taking an early morning walk to the dog park. Walking up from the ferry landing with the rising sun splashing onto the eastern bank of the Island and casting geometric shadows from the temporary fencing, I see a blond woman in a beige coat playing catch with a little brown, black and white dog. She tosses a green tennis ball toward the pet who is leaping and running excitedly to...

Three weeks after signing a lease with hot-pot restaurant Liukoshui, Hudson Related signed a 10-year lease with pet care service pupculture for a 3,792-square foot location at 544 Main Street. In their two-story space, pupculture will provide pet pampering services, daycare, boarding, in-home pet feeding, and unlike their other two locations, a full-blown pet store. They are also working toward getting a veterinarian to be on-site a couple of days a w...

RIOC has a lot on their plate this month, including an assessment of the long out-of-commission Motorgate escalators. The agenda for the October meeting was a lengthy 17 items, that included Lighthouse renovation plans and possibly future access to the local landmark, as well as a new playground and dog run. Here is what you missed!

Elevators

Did you know RIOC was responsible for eight elevators on the Island, a number that includes the two at the...

Get your hard hats ready! Island construction was the unofficial theme of the September 6 Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Board of Directors meeting.

Some of the upcoming work will be funded by a one-time State payment of $23.9 million, compensation for the land that the Loop Road, which rings Cornell’s development, sits on. As part of his presentation of the 2018-2019 budget, RIOC Comptroller Muneshwar Jagdharry affirmed that the $23.9 million...
