Support the Joy of Reading at PS/IS 217
PS/IS 217 parent, Serife Gokdemir, is inviting members of the Roosevelt Island community to sponsor a local student for the school's second annual Read-A-Thon event.
Dear members of Roosevelt Island Community,
On behalf of PS/IS 217 PTA, I reach out to you regarding our second annual Read-A-Thon event, Warm Up With a Good Book, which will run during the school’s holiday break. In so doing, we ask for your kind support and contribution toward this event.
The most important goal of this event is to encourage our students to read during their holiday break; we are hoping to reach 100,000 minutes of time spent reading. The second goal is to raise funds for the school. All money raised through the read-a-thon will be used to directly support the school’s music and arts enrichment programs, and for much needed school supplies.
During the period of read-a-thon, students are asked to pledge their participation by signing and returning their reading logs in a timely fashion. Students will also solicit family members and friends to sponsor their reading with either a flat donation or a pledge tied to minutes read. In return, all students who read, regardless of their participation in fundraising, will be awarded for their efforts.
Once Upon a Read-A-Thon, our first ever read-a-thon, held last year, was a success. Despite comprising only 10 percent student participation, students read for 32,000 minutes and raised $3,932 during the two week period! This year, we are hoping to beat both records made last year, and increase both minutes spent reading, and money raised via fundraising.
In this great season of giving, we seek help from our local community members to sponsor students who want to participate but aren't able to find sponsors of their own.
If you would like to sponsor a student or just contribute to the effort please email email@example.com. Your contribution will be matched with a participating student and tallied towards a student's total. No gift is too small; all contributions/gifts are tax-deductible and help us reach our goal.
We are so glad to all Island neighbors as part of PS/IS 217 community. We are counting on your support to make our Read-A-Thon a success! Our goal is to make our students stronger, more enthusiastic readers. Thank you in advance for your support, and for sharing a love of reading with us.
