The Best Roosevelt Island Fireworks Guide

If you plan to watch the fireworks from the best vantage point on the East River, Roosevelt Island, here’s everything you need to know.

Getting Here:

Both tram cars are up and running today, on a weekday schedule. The F-train is running on a Saturday schedule with increased service prior to and following the Macy’s Fireworks celebration; the fireworks show runs from 9:25-9:50 pm tonight.

A great way to get here is the ferry; it will be running on a weekend schedule, ending early with the last Astoria bound ferry leaving the Island at 2:18 pm, and the last Wall Street bound ferry leaving here at 2:44.

Parking on the Island today is limited with no street parking south of the Tram station as of 8 pm yesterday.

Visitor parking at the Motorgate garage will be limited to ensure adequate parking for those with monthly permits. Residents without a monthly access card should be prepared to show proof of residency when approaching the Roosevelt Island Bridge at Vernon Boulevard.

Residents who need to park in Motorgate should arrive no later than 5 pm, on July 4, to secure admittance.

Getting Around

The red bus will not circulate south of the Tram station after 12 pm. It will make all its other normal stops along the Island route. There will be no Octagon express bus. There will be golf carts at the Roosevelt Island Tram station to assist those needing help traveling south to Cornell or Southpoint Park.

Where to Watch

The Cornell Tech campus, particularly the hills, will be a great place to watch the show. The campus will be open all day. The school’s café will operate an outdoor grill, with food for purchase, beginning at noon, and lasting until 9:20 when the fireworks will commence.

Southpoint Park, just south of the Cornell Tech campus, will open at 5 pm and will have food for purchase, including bounce houses, double inflatable slides, a balloon artist and face painters will be available. There will also be DJ music entertainment and a simulcast broadcast of the Macy’s Fireworks soundtrack in Southpoint Park. Together, Southpoint Park and Cornell Tech comprise 2.5 acres of open space to spread out and watch the show.

You do not need a ticket to view the fireworks from either the Cornell Tech campus or Southpoint Park.

FDR Four Freedoms State Park does require tickets. None will be given onsite. (They were offered online on June 28 and June 29). The park will open at 6:00 pm.

Ticket holders should be prepared in advance to show their printout or barcode ticket via their mobile device when coming to the Four Freedoms Park security checkpoint. No entrance is permitted into Four Freedoms State Park after 9 pm.
