Island Kids Have Options for Spring Break

With Spring Break fast approaching, there is still time to sign up for some great enrichment opportunities for your children right here on Roosevelt Island. MSTDA Broadway Bootcamps: Spring and Summer After launching their first Broadway Bootcamp during mid-winter break, Main Street Theater and Dance Alliance (MSTDA) will again offer a fun filled, action packed musical theater experience the week of April 23rd. This time they will run two separate 2-day intensives, between 9am and 4:15 pm, culminating in a performance of a Broadway show at the end. Students may sign up for one or both. Each 2-day camp is $170, and the cost is $300 for both camps. Sibling discounts and scholarships are available. The camps will be taught by Jonathan and Kimbirdlee Fadner respectively. Providing a safe, nurturing environment that encourages children to take risks, they will do theater games, develop song and dance numbers and explore character and plot development as they prepare an abridged Broadway show, which will be performed at the end of each 2-day segment. My son had a wonderful experience doing three days of Broadway Boot Camp in February and he developed a great deal of confidence, both as a performer, as a reader, and as a person, during the process. Island mom Amanda Sadlier said her seven year old daughter, loved the bootcamp. It was her first experience with MSTDA. “She came home from the class and she kept singing, acting, and dancing all week! The teachers and environment made her feel completely comfortable and we loved being able to see what they worked on at the end of the day! We will be back!” MSTDA will also be offering their FIRST EVER summer camp this season! You can sign up for both here!

Art Excel Program

Newcomer on the scene, Art Excel program, is offering a 5-day course for children aged 8 - 13, during the week of spring break, focused eliminating stress and negative emotions while improving concentration and learning how to better handle peer pressure. It will take place at the senior center at 546 Main Street, and will include games, yoga and breathing techniques, creative projects, problem solving strategies, leadership opportunities.

Emphasis will be placed on hands on activities like service projects, which allow them to experience concepts they are discussing first hand. The program will teach a specific set of breathing techniques that systematically release emotional and physical stress. Children can use these techniques at any time to bring about a state of calm and relaxation. Around Town
