Updates on Campus Plans

Happy 2017! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and that you have been staying safe and warm during the recent snow storms.


2017 is an exciting year for Cornell Tech. Over the summer, we will start to gradually move into our new campus, and it will officially open in September. As such, we have shifted our focus to the operation of the campus and have several important updates for the community.




At our recent Cornell Tech Construction & Community Task Force meeting, we introduced a team from Allied Universal Security, the firm that will be providing security on the Cornell Tech campus. Allied Universal is the largest security services company in North America, with more than 10,000 security professionals in the New York City area. They come with decades of experience in security, the armed forces, and law enforcement, including the NYPD. To learn more about Allied Universal please visit their site www.aus.com.




As many of you know, a café that will be open to the public is planned for the Bloomberg Center, the first academic building on campus. We are excited to announce that we have selected Starr Catering Group to operate the café. Starr believes in “good food that’s good for you.” They will be offering a variety of healthy and delicious food, including breakfast, grain bowls made to order, salads, soups, and sandwiches. We will be advertising campus job opportunities, including those with Allied Universal, Starr Catering, and other contractors, very soon in the community.




At the Task Force meeting, we also discussed the occupants of The House, our residential building on campus. Our admissions process is well underway and students, faculty, and researchers are enthusiastic about living and working on Roosevelt Island. 


When the campus opens in September, Cornell Tech will not have a large enough student population to fill The House. In anticipation of this, the Cornell Tech lease allows for Cornell-affiliated occupancy as our population scales. 


Weill Cornell Medicine will take 66 apartments at The House for five years for medical students, postdocs, and possibly a small number of visiting academics. As you know, members of the Weill Cornell Medicine community already reside on Roosevelt Island. 




I am also excited to announce that we are co-hosting a Hacking Through Barriers event this spring. This three-day hackathon/makeathon is dedicated to addressing issues related to disabilities. 


I will be working closely with the Roosevelt Island community to identify “Need-Knowers” – people with disabilities, their caretakers, relatives and/or healthcare professionals – who can propose “challenges” where the solution is currently not known or affordable. Cornell Tech and other students will then work with them to develop a hardware or software solution. 


I am very excited about this important collaboration, and I look forward to talking to many of you about this over the coming weeks. Cornell Tech’s mission is to have an impact on society, and this hackathon is a great example of the real-world challenges we want to address.


As we move toward the opening of the campus this year, I want to thank all of you for your collaboration, ideas, and support over the past few years. This is a very exciting time for Roosevelt Island.
