On August 5, in a sold-out free event, Cornell Tech held their Community Day to welcome Islanders to the newly opened campus.
Elected officials lined up to speak at a ceremony on the lawn, while Islanders sampled the catered breakfast, made crafts with kids, posed for a photo booth, and enjoyed the open space.
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney praised the school’s “world-class architecture.” She said, “It’s truly breathtaking, what they accomplished… it exceeded our wildest dreams.”
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer thanked the Roosevelt Island Community Coalition, and specifically Christina Delfico, for their advocacy. She said that Cornell Tech’s open space shows what it means to be a community. Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright and City Council Member Ben Kallos also addressed the crowd.
A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for September.
