Snapshots: 2017 Tree Lighting Ceremony

December 10, 2017

Roosevelt Island kicked off the holiday season Friday night with the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.

With the lights of New York City as its backdrop, the event featured live performances by Uptown Social Club, first and fourth grade students in the Beacon afterschool program, and a rowdy chorus of "Santa Clause is Coming to Town" sung by Island girl scout troops and the Man in Red himself, who arrived at the event in the back of an NYPD squad car. (He told the crowd he'd landed on the wrong side of the law by parking his sled in the wrong spot—we feel your pain, Santa!)

This year, performers from Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance treated Islanders by caroling up Main Street from the Tram all the way to the Tree Lighting ceremony.

Island Photographer Irina Island Images shares these photos from the event.
