February 14, 1920 – December 31, 2017
Ena Valencia Shinnery was born on February 14, 1920, to the late Frances Elizabeth Stoutt-Shinnery
and Alfred Shinnery in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Her siblings all predeceased her.
Ena departed this life as quietly as she lived it, on December 31, 2017, at her residence on Roosevelt Island, where she’d lived for the past 26 years.
In 1940, Ena completed her high school education in St. Thomas, and later came to New York. She received her license as a dietitian from New York Institute of Dietetics in 1950, but spent most of her working career as a book/record keeper with United Merchants and Manufacturers, retiring in 1997. She was also a baker extraordinaire and a fabulous seamstress.
A faithful member of St. Paul Progressive Methodist Church, Ena held several positions there, including Sunday school teacher. Last year, she was honored by the church for her almost eight decades of service.
Ena leaves behind three nephews, Hugo, Reuben, and Joseph Vanterpool; two nieces, Yvonne Dawson and Mabel Todman of Tortola, British Virgin Islands; several great-nephews and nieces; several cousins and other relatives; her god-daughter Fern La Borde; special friends, Ana, Louella, Lauren, Noa, Joe, Kyle, Maisie, Vanessa, Emma, Justine, and Dahlia, the girl scouts, and a host of others. They will cherish her beautiful memory.
Gone, but not forgotten!
