RIOC Stumbles over Steps

March 9, 2018

This is an open letter to RIOC.

As a resident of Roosevelt Island, I was very dismayed to hear that RIOC has squandered an opportunity to finally resolve the issue of the awful steps jutting out onto the sidewalk in front of 575 Main Street. As a neighbor from Island House has explained to me, it seems Island House was asked to remove the steps so as to make the sidewalk safer and more passable for pedestrians. Numerous RIOC presidents have wanted those steps gone and finally the whole neighborhood has a chance to benefit. These steps pose a danger to the young, elderly, and disabled, and have often been a seating area for customers of Bread and Butter Deli where garbage collects and the steps are rendered impassable with people hanging out.

If RIOC has not responded to proposals or offered to help in this solution, what can we expect from RIOC for the safety of our neighbors?
