PS/IS 217 is going green. Construction on the school’s green roof is scheduled to begin within the next month.
“We are delighted to announce that construction will commence soon and we are looking forward to integrating the green roof into our STEM-enhanced curriculum across all grade levels,” said Principal Mandana Beckman.
The project was the top winner in Council Member Ben Kallos’ Participatory Budgeting competition in 2015, winning a third of all votes in the district. The school has since been working on drawing up specific plans for the space. Construction is expected to take a year.
“On behalf of all of us at PS/IS 217, I want to say a huge thank you to the many people who helped this project come to life – to Council Member Ben Kallos, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, the many Roosevelt Island community partners, our PTA, and all the voters. We are so grateful for your support,” said Beckman.
