To the Editor:
A favorite public garden on the Island is now fenced off. Plopped down in the middle is a piece of junk sculpture – rusted scrap metal on a pedestal, referred to as a plinth.
It should be noted that a plinth is traditionally made of stone; something worth saving for. This one seems to be made of plastic.
It’s time, also, to junk the fatuous notion of our home being an “Island of Art.” We already have an island of art; it’s right across the river and is called Manhattan. Lots of real art there. A strip mall on Long Island would be a better venue for this thing foisted on us by well-meaning, but aesthetically ignorant, bureaucrats.
The new plantings do look nice though.
