Health & Wellness: Let's Talk About Cancer

Assistant Professor Dr. Oninye. D. Balogun, MD is presenting this free seminar

 

Cornell Tech and the Roosevelt Island Seniors Association (RISA) are partnering on this free health and wellness seminar. Let's Talk About Cancer, will be held on July 11, 6 pm, 

 

at the Tata Center on the Cornell campus, at 11 East Loop Road. If this seminar is well attended, a series of them, starting in the fall, on a variety of topics relating to health and wellness will be 
offered.

 

This effort was initially spearheaded by The Roosevelt Island Women's Health Organization (RIWHO), headed by Laila Amatullah and together, the RIWHO and Cornell Tech organized a number of seminars for to the Island community.

 

 

 

After Amatullah passed away, the RIWHO folded. Recently, Barbara Parker, head of the Roosevelt Island Senior Association (RISA), asked if they could pick this effort up and Cornell Tech agreed. If this first seminar is well-attended, they will discuss plans for a future series of seminars to start in the fall.

 

Nigerian born Onyinye D. Balogun, M.D.Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine will present the one hour seminar on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Balogun, who moved to the United States as a child, was inspired to became a doctor after a trip to Nigeria to visit an aunt who had breast cancer. Her aunt was scarred from poorly administered radiation therapy, and Balogun became intent on finding better ways to practice radiotherapy.

 

After graduating from Harvard University she spent a year in Ibadan, Nigeria, working with a breast cancer advocacy group focused on providing accurate educational information to patients about radiotherapy. After graduating from Yale University School of Medicine, she initiated her residency training at the University of Chicago and completed her final year at New York University.

 

In addition to serving as an attending Radiation Oncologist, Balogun serves as an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine specializing in the treatment of breast and gastrointestinal malignancies.
