In 1996, I ran for community school board. I believe I was the last Roosevelt Islander to run in a city-wide election. There are residents from that time who still live here and would remember. Back then, we voted in the senior center. On the morning of the election, the Board of Elections failed to deliver ballots to the community. Registered voters coming to vote before going off-Island for work on the morning of May 7, 1996, were disenfranchised.
Interestingly, both Coler and Goldwater Hospital residents received their ballots.
With that said, my message to today's registered voters is that this year more than ever I believe VOTING REALLY MATTERS!
