Snapshots: 2018 Tree Lighting

December 1, 2018

Roosevelt Island kicked off the holiday season Friday night with the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and joined by many partner organizations including the Roosevelt Island Navigators, the Cafe at Cornell Tech, Amalgamated Bank, and Island Kids.

Performers from Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance, the Hope Church choir, and Girl Scouts, treated Islanders by caroling up Main Street from the Tram all the way to the Tree Lighting ceremony.

With the lights of New York City as its backdrop, the event featured live performances by the Hotelheads band, first grade students in the Beacon afterschool program belted out "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." The Island girl scout troops and the Man in Red who arrived at the event in the back of an NYPD squad car - late, according to ribbing by RIOC's Erica Spencer-El, sang "Jingle Bells" together. Spencer-El, along with RIOC President Susan Rosenthal MC'd the event that included performances, jokes, and special guests RIRA President Lynne Shinozaki and Public Safety Department heads Jack McManus and Kevin Brown.
